Guests today

Today my dad and my extra mom came for a visit. Me and mom Beda went out on town to shop and went back just in time for dinner. A very smart decision!
When they first arrived we had some tiramisú
the kids had one without alcohol of course
Then we had lemon and honey marinated salmon and shrimps with basil, potatoe gratin and bean and ruccola salad with avocado, leek and dijon for dinner (forgot to take a picture because I was so hungry). My dad ate so much his tummy hurted!
And before they left we had to eat some semlor (filled cardemom buns) and negro balls (it's actually called that. "Negerbollar" in Swedish).
Porsche wanted semlor too....

  1. It's not called "niggro balls" in swedish anymore, thats old school and racist. Nowadays we say Chocolate balls because it really is balls made of chocolate and nothing else...

  2. I love tiramasu too. The second one with the hearts is adorable!! The picture of Porsche going for the dessert reminds me of the time my Gram's cat got her paws in our AngelFood Cake. There were little paw prints in it. She got in a lot of trouble. ;P

  4. Katti: Its a huge difference between the word niggro (refering to nigger) and negro thats refering to the word for black colour.

  5. @Katti: What is the new name for Finska pinnar/Finnish sticks then? Is it also degrading?

There is nothing racist about the real name negro balls since negro is the name of the color black they used in the 30's or so when this cake was invented.

  12. It's called chokladbollar or kokosbollar. Why it's racist to say "niggerballs" is beacause you don't use the word nigger when you refer to dark skinned people(in swedish neger) anymore.

  19. Yes, many people thinks "negerbollar/negro balls/" is racist because people get hurt and upset when a dish is called by a name that referring to slavery and has a negative sense. And in Sweden "neger" means "nigger" and that word nobody uses except if you wanna humiliate somebody.

Adora: No, I don't think Finska pinnar/Finnish sticks is degrading because you referring to a country. Not one specific race or nationality. If that's degrading then American pancakes, Turkish yogurt and other dishes named by a country would be racist and thats just crazy.
Why don't you call them "black/brown balls" if you are referring to the color black? Negro is black in spanish but now we are writing in english so thats just confusing. In the 30's all people called dark skinned people for "neger/nigger" but today the society moved on and realised the word "neger/nigger" is a bad word.

With these words I don't mean that you are a racist. I just react on that you say that we, in Sweden call them "negro/neger bollar" beacuse moste people don't.

  20. http://litteratur.viwebben.se/ Tycker att denna artikel förklarar den negativa bemärkelsen av ordet "negerboll".

  21. Words are neither "good" or "bad", it is our perception & what we associate with those words which either good or bad.

Besides, the dish isn't named after the racial slur, it's an adjective describing the dish.
